The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional holiday in China. It marks the beginning of a new year according to the lunar calendar and has a history of over 4,000 years. The festival is rooted in ancient agricultural practices and religious beliefs, and it is believed to have originated during the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BCE).
According to legend, the Spring Festival began as a way to drive away a mythical beast called “Nian,” which was said to come out at the end of the year to harm people. People used loud noises, red colors, and firecrackers to scare it away. These customs have been passed down through generations and are still practiced today.
The celebration includes family reunions, special meals, traditional performances, and the giving of red envelopes filled with money. It is a time for reflection, renewal, and hope for the coming year.
